NFA Frequently Asked Questions

What is Natural Fertility Awareness anyway and does it work?

It is possible for women to conceive only during 7-8 days per month. For the rest of the cycle it is impossible. Natural Fertility Awareness (NFA) is learning to recognise the signs in the woman’s body that indicate these days (the fertile days). NFA is very successful when taught by a qualified teacher.

Is this the same as the Rhythm Method?

Most definitely not

How does it work?

The different methods of NFA use different charting techniques, but all have the same purpose, to show a couple the natural cycle of their fertility. The woman is taught to understand her own pattern, so that she can identify her fertile and infertile days in each menstrual cycle.

I’ve got blocked tubes – can you do anything?

Your doctor may be able to pursue treatment to unblock your tubes. NFA teaches you about your signs of fertility so that you can maximise your chances of having a baby as soon as your tubes have been unblocked.

I’ve got polycystic ovaries – can you do anything?

With polycystic ovaries, you may be fertile in some cycles and not in others.
NFA teaches you and your husband how to recognise when you are fertile and when you are infertile so that you can know when you are likely to conceive and when you cannot conceive.
If you are having treatment it is good to try for a baby as soon as possible after this. NFA teaches you to recognise the time when you are most fertile and the times when you cannot conceive a child.

The doctors say I’m infertile – can you help?

The Billings organisation completed a 5-year (study/trial)? l in 2003 with couples who were said to be (infertile/subfertile)? 65% of these couples were helped to have babies.

My periods are very irregular – can you help?

I’m approaching the menopause – can you help?

Yes! NFA teaches you to recognise your infertile times and the times when you may be fertile. You can monitor your reproductive health and remain confident.

I am breast-feeding – what happens when I stop?

Fertility sometimes returns while you are breast-feeding or may not return until you have weaned the baby. NFA teaches you to monitor what is happening to you. You will learn to recognise when your fertility returns.

I am 43 and I suffer from high blood pressure. My periods come only every few months. We are wondering whether we can use Natural Fertility Awareness?

Yes! It is very useful when fertility is winding down. NFA is completely natural, simple and effective. It teaches you to recognise your fertile days and your infertile days.

NFA is natural, simple and effective and couples are empowered to manage their own fertility – Instruction should always be sought from a qualified teacher.

Does it really help couples to conceive?

In a recent (trial/study)? carried out in 17 centres over 5 years (1999-2003) with 207 couples classed as (infertile/subfertile)? 65% achieved the pregnancy they had been longing for after learning Billings Ovulation Method. (See Statistics) In China 32% of 48 267 couples trying to conceive a baby, were successful after 3 months even though many couples had been trying for 6 years.

Can it really help postpone pregnancy?

Nothing other than abstinence is 100% effective.
(Comparative table to be added. i.e method related/user related)

It sounds very complicated to use.

NFA is very simple and easy to use, only requiring women to tune in to certain natural signs in their bodies as they go about their daily activities. NFA has been successfully taught in many third world countries where levels of education are very limited. It helps a woman to learn to interpret her own unique pattern of fertility and infertility. This enables the couple to use the method to achieve, postpone or avoid pregnancy and to monitor reproductive health.

Natural Fertility Awareness must place a terrible strain on a marriage…
